About Pallara

Pallara is a beautiful leafy suburb south of Brisbane about 20 kms from the city. It is nestled between the suburbs of Forest Lake and Algester. About 250 families live on properties which tend to start from 4 acres in size. Some back onto Oxley Creek and others back on to The Anabranch and Blunder Creek.

People tend to live in Pallara for the bush, peace and quiet or to conduct their own small business from farming to earthworks.

The newsletter aims to share information from people who live locally which may be of interest to others residents.

The newsletter tends to be distributed each month and our local MP Karen Struthers kindly copies 230 for us.

Ten local Pallara families distribute the newsletter to local letterboxes and the school prints and shares the newsletter with school families.

The morning tea group is open to local residents and the school community.
We meet on the 2nd Saturday of every month at the Pallara State School, 282 Ritchie Road.

You are invited to bring a friend or neighbour and a very small plate of morning tea to share for an hour or so.

Transport: If you need a lift, there are many willing drivers.

Seniors Week Art Mural project - 27th Aug 08

The morning tea group successfully gained funding from local councillor Kevin Bianchi for this event. The group engaged the Pallara State School P&C to manage the event. It was a fabulous morning and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

BCC funded art workshops and activities
The P&C has received $7660 for the "Pallara - Create and Connect through Art" project.
This project has funded 18 workshops (16 completed so far).

* 5 of 6 pottery workshops

at the Pallara State School (supported by Brisbane City Council)

1. Come and Try pottery – Sunday 13th September 12 noon to 2pm It’s time to get your hands dirty. Delve into the fun and engaging world of pottery with this unique workshop. Workshop facilitator Grant Hodges will guide you through the techniques of pottery wheel and hand sculpting. Learn the tricks of pottery and create a range of objects that you can take home.

2. Clay animation workshop – Sunday 13th September, 2:30 to 4:30 pm
Come along and learn how to make characters out of clay and bring them to life on screen using frame by frame digital stop motion animation in camera editing. Produce your own DVD after one workshop. Learn how Wallace and Gromit were made! Max 15 places. This workshop is for young and old, from 5 years to 95 years. Cost: $5 per person. To book: contact the school 3723 6333 or email admin@pallarass.eq.edu.au.

New infrared camera for nextbox
Thank you to Blue Fin Fishing Club for generously donating funds for an infrared camera.
The camera will be installed in one of the six nestboxes at school to enable students to monitor the activity of gliders and possums in the boxes.

New P&C Iceboxes

Thank you to Greenbank RSL Early this year (2009) Greenbank RSL very generously donated
two large ice boxes to the Pallara State School Parents and Citizens Association.
This will make it easier for the P&C to run barbeques and events which help raise funds for important projects at school.

Furniture fund appeal success

Pallara has run a toad hunt for the last four years. This year we have not been able to find a sponsor, so we haven’t run the hunt in 2009, yet! There are heaps of toads around at the moment so if there is a business out there willing to donate $200 the toad hunt can be organised in a short time e.g. by early April 09.

Pallara Clean Up Aust Day

Sunday 1 March 2009 Pallara had a very successful clean up event on Sunday thanks to the 32 volunteers (including seven children). We had some special visitors this year - a few of our nearby SES crew. We also had some new sponsors and sincerely thank all our sponsors who help make the event possible.

Our local Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor made a sizeable contribution through funding from the
Lord Mayor's Suburban Initiative Fund which helped provide a barbeque and cold drinks for all the volunteers.

Planning update – Lower Oxley Creek and Pallara The last Community Planning Team meeting was held in October 2008 and we were advised that, all being well, the Paradise Wetlands Neighbourhood Plan will go to Council and State early in 2009. A plan should be available for public viewing about March 2009. Future planning regarding the remainder of the Lower Oxley Creek area is envisaged to start early next year (B Haines).

November 2008 – Community Update from Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor

RECENT FLOOD EVENT UPDATE
On 20th of November Paradise Road flooded and the Oxley Creek rose to levels not seen since the washing away of Brookbent Rd bridge in 1996. The floodwaters backed up and water levels in Sheepstation Gully were high. The entire Oxley Creek corridor was impacted by burgeoning waters, during the day I was at Brookbent Road and the levels were at the same height as the road base which is still evident. Despite having road closed signage erected in Paradise Road some people chose to ignore this and ventured into the flooded areas resulting in a number of vehicles being swamped and submerged. Fortunately there were no major injuries to drivers however the cars were badly water damaged. Landel St and Vied Road were flooded also and some residents experienced restricted access to their homes.

POWERLINK TRANSMISSION LINES
Powerlink has advised the FINAL Environmental Impact Study (EIS) has been released and is now available onto the Powerlink and Natural Solutions websites. The identified location of these transmission lines will be on the western side of Paradise Road. I also have a printed copy available for viewing in my ward office.

SEASONS GREETINGS I would like to extend my best wishes for the upcoming Christmas season to all Parkinson Ward residents. This is certainly a time for spending time with family and enjoying the benefits we enjoy in our local community. My office will be closed between 22 December 2008 to 2 January 2009 and any residents requiring assistance during this time can contact the Call Centre on 3403 8888.

Angela's pre-election information for Pallara residents

I currently lecture at University masters level in Business/Professional Accounting and specifically lecture in Sustainable Enterprise. Over the past 23 years I have lived locally. Three generations of my family live in the Parkinson Ward. Rapid growth in our area has led to many changes. Parkinson is the fastest growing ward in the city. Further growth in our area will need to be carefully managed.

My vision for Pallara is to see the wonderful sense of community retained in the long term, by promoting and building strong community partnership links. The recent Spotlighting event was a great demonstration of locals coming together and enjoying the special environmental attributes Pallara has to offer. As Councillor for Parkinson, I will facilitate strong partnerships within the community and strengthen our networks. I successfully lobbied Lord Mayor Campbell Newman for funding to undertake research for the Pallara History book. I look forward to being able to share the celebration of 50 years of Pallara State School, which will coincide with the book’s release.

The three priorities I will advocate for in Pallara:

Improving service delivery and enhancing consultation between Council and the community – particularly in ensuring there is fairness and equity with the Neighbourhood Planning process
The provision of a BBQ and picnic facilities in our local park and
Funding to complete the furnishing of the Pallara Community Room.

Seniors Week 2008 Art Mural project

The Pallara State School P&C received $995 from the Department of Communities for a Seniors Week activity in 2008.

The funding enabled us to employ a community artist to work with Seniors and students at the school to create the mural.
The mural was completed in Seniors Week on Wednesday 27th August 08 after school

Oxley Creek Task Force

2006 saw the establishment of the Oxley Creek Taskforce. The representatives on the taskforce come from state and local government departments, community groups and the business sector.

The taskforce is a non statutory body whose main role is to identify the different options available to Brisbane City, Logan, Ipswich and Beaudesert Shire Councils to address such matters as:

the impact of future development in the Oxley Creek catchment
flooding in the catchment (if it ever rains again)
creek rehabilitation and
the protection and enhancement of green space and wildlife corridors throughout the catchment.

The taskforce met twice during the year and also conducted two workshops aimed at identifying the best means to achieve the taskforce’s objectives.

The four main priorities to come out of these workshops were:

the rehabilitation and future use of the Readymix site which has recently ceased sand mining
the urgent need to stop further erosion of the bed and banks of Oxley Creek upstream of Brookbent Road
the importance of retaining and enhancing the green space and wildlife linkages in the catchment and
sustainable communities - what are sustainable communities and how do they work.

The taskforce is to have its own website to allow the community to keep in touch with what the taskforce is discussing; unfortunately this has not eventuated as yet. Technical troubles with the Pallara.com website has also meant that the latest Oxley Creek Taskforce up dates have not been able to be displayed. Hopefully next year the taskforce will develop its own website and a link can be made between the two sites.

The location
The Paradise Wetlands area is the pocket between the Pallara parklands through to Learoyd Road and bordered by Paradise, Brookbent and Gooderham Roads (see map). Paradise Wetlands is the pilot Neighbourhood Plan for the Lower Oxley Creek.

The Paradise Wetlands Neighbourhood Planning process has been funded by the Australian Green Development Forum (AGDF) on behalf of three key landowners (developers) in the Paradise Wetlands study area (Stocklands, Uniland and Camden Road Investments). The management of the project is the responsibility of the Manager, Brisbane City Council City Planning Branch (Michael Papageorgiou - 3403 4220).
